Here's what I do with dark ebay pics--it looks like a bit of corrosion, unsure of the net grade.

Maybe Fine details but for a net grade I'm at a Scudzy AG3 considering it's very poor eye appeal.

Well the coin is what it is. I don't know why you would be shocked. Scudzy, the term used by LC collectors, was intended for coins that look exactly like this one. Totally corroded with green verdigris very evident. There is very little value for a coin like this even with the Fine details and being almost 200 years old. At coin shows you can usually find these type of coins in junk boxes for $5.

would love to find these for $5 I just sold it for $28 so although I am not quitting my day job with a $5 gain on the coin thats fine. I was being sarcastic with my shocked comment. I remember your posts from awhile back when you bashed everyone elses low grade coins.

I don't bash any ones coins! I call them as I see them. Some folks may take it that way but it is not my intent. As I have expressed before I don't believe that buying low grade/questionable coins is worth any ones time, but, if that's what someone likes then go for it. It's never been my cup of tea in the 45 years I've been collecting. If I see a junk coin, I call it junk. If I see a nice coin, I call it nice. This forum is a learning process for everybody involved. Including you and me. At the coin shows I go to there are dealers that have boxes of large cents of all dates in poor condition for $5. A lot of the sellers on ebay are most likely buying out of these type of boxes and reselling. I think it's great you like Large Cents ,so do I, it's a passion of mine, along with Morgan dollars. Good luck Jerry...Peace out...

you might be right about the coins being put on e-bay that are picked out of dealers reject boxes. I have not been to any large shows to witness the $5 box you speak of. My only expereince is buying on E-bay and my local coin shop. I try to find coins that are a bit underpriced in my view. Most of the time I can make a few dollars a coin that way. I will keep some of the better ones for my collection. Selling the lesser coins pays for the better ones. Large cents in xf or higher grades can become very pricey. Especially the early years. I can not see spending many hundreds if not thousands of dollars for a single coin. First coin I ever bought was your name on here. Slabbed by NGC at vf25. Been holding it for 2 or 3 years and could still not sell it for what I paid. Same for the 1909S VDB penny and 3 legged Buffalo nickel. Being a middleman for large cents has been the only way I make a few bucks to make up for the slabbed key date paper losses.
