I don't know if this was done before and I probably should have done a Search. I see some pretty impressive finds pop up now-and-again, but I was wondering what gems have found their ways into the hands of the CCF members here. For instance, has anyone found a 1909 S VDB in their spare change, CRHing, or maybe metal detecting?
Kind of curious to see what folks here at CCF remember being discussed here over the years.

I remember a few threads about finding 1909 VDB's and 1909S Coins but I don't think anyone has found 1909S VBD's. I know one of our members picked up a 1916-D Mercury dime in a scrap silver bin once. Doesn't get much better than that. My best find was a 1936 Silver quarter which was in G-4 so pretty much worth spot.

Way, way back when I was a kid and although a coin collector, I had very little knowledge of what was rare, hard to find or worth anything. My Dad let me look through all his change every night. He owned a gas station and got lots of change. I had a Whitman Lincoln Cent Folder and was filling it little by little. When full, I started a second set never realizing I had found ALL of the Lincolns in change including the 09, 09S, 09S VDB, 14D, 22 plain. Of course all this happened a long, long time ago. So far back in time that the Roosevelt dime hadn't come out yet. I've always wondered about back then how many other valuable coins I let pass because I already had one of more.

That's pretty exciting Carl - a full set from circulation. Certainly, right place-right time has a lot to do with good fortune, more so now as we put time between a newly minted coin destined to be a key. I hope I'm savvier about things now for the next generation or two; benefiting from foresight.
$$Man - I guess my aim was to determine key CCF finds rather than key coins acquired through a purchase. So I suppose that encompasses a bunch of inputs. I'll leave that up to the community though to decide what channels count.

Favourite bargains... My best would have to be the East Aden Protectorate coin I keep bragging about, found in a "free, thanks for visiting" bucket at a coin show. It's extremely rare, value is probably upwards of $50. Then there was the silver Iles du Vent 12-sol coin, date 1731 - found in the 18/$1 bucket!! It's a bit bent and worn-out... but a very exciting find and the oldest coin in my collection. My second-oldest coin: a British shilling from 1745, with a dent in it from an assayer. Somehow this ended up in the melt-price .925 silver bucket, so I bought it about 2 seconds after seeing it. My best group find: three German big silver coins for $10 each: Aluminum Biafra coin, cost under 25 cents: $2.50 uncirculated Panama coin: And countless smaller bargains as well. But... no real home runs from circulation.

I'd say those bucket finds, while not from circulation, come from a source that was not 'supposed' to be of any major value. Nice finds! How many of us spied a nice coin in the Take one - Leave one penny tray next to a register? If I saw a plain Wheat cent, I'd likely swap it out!! You never know...

Almost 2 years ago I found a 1942/41 D dime certified by NGC from a bag of thousand Mercury dimes I purchased from APMEX. I also found quite a few RPM and varieties as well. As a teenager I found a 1885 IHC that later graded by NGC as BN-64. A few bargains over time that I spend pennies that were value into the dollars, just have to look with the right tool of knowledge.

I've found quite a few IHC varieties unattributed, some of the "top 10". I've found 1998-S and 1999-S Close AM LMC proofs, 70-S small date proofs and MS coins. A 42/41-D? Nice! Only foreign overdates for me, some considered scarce. I keep looking, because you never know what will turn up!

^^ Wow, just read through that thread. I'm lucky to just find a Mercury dime in general, let alone one with a mintage of only 260,000ish.

Thanks for bringing up that 1916-D thread! It happened during my several year 'hiatus' from collecting. Great to see stories like that!

Just incredible - thanks for posting the link! That might be a tough candidate to beat, but I'm interested in hearing some more incredible finds by members here.
