I bought my father some more gold coins today.

I told him I may trade one of the $20.00 for one I have.

I have a 1904 Liberty.

Three of the coins I just bought are 1850, 1866 and 1872.

If just based on date which one would you pick?

I know it is better to see pictures, but can't do that until I get home later this afternoon.

All the coins were bought at spot.

It would be for my type set, guess I am wondering if different date might have more of a cool factor.

I would go with my collecting mantra: "Older is better".

You may be right Moe.

I just checked grey sheet, it shows the 1850 as having more value.
Of course the grade could have a impact on the price, I think
The grades are close on all of them.

The 1872 seems to have the lowest mintage of the three but I agree with Moe: Older Is Better!

All things being equal I would go with 1866. Fascinating time frame in American History considering what had just taken place

The 1904 is currently in my type set .. can trade if I want

The 1866 S looks like might have been cleaned/polished on obvers. Or jewelry.

The 1850 does have a hit on reverse near bottom

For me it'd be between the 1850 and 1872.

The 1850 seems to have the most detail on the hair of the three earlier years. Gold is soft and I imagine it doesn't take much to acquire hits.

The 1872 is a lower mintage date which is also appealing to me.

I'd choose either one of those.

Rest in Peace

That 1866-s is HARSHLY cleaned, looks like with a wire brush, or maybe whizzed like crazy....so you do not want that one. I really like the 1850, lots of detail and eye appeal...and being somewhat of a key date; I would go with that one.

I am leaning the same way.

With checking some price guides and ebay, it looks like the
1850 sells at a good price. The 1872 being the lowest mintage shows a good price jump around VF grade.

In hand the 1904 is the better looking coin, but it seems to be tied to bullion value more than the others.

The 1850 is the first year for the $20.00 (if I read Red Book correctly). Not counting the pattern of 1849.

For me .. little bit of a hard decision to make.

If it were me, I would keep the 1850. I really like your bullion stacking style for your dad.

Johnny you must have posted while I was typing.

I agree on the 1866 S.

The 1850 and the 1872 ... to me are very close in eye appeal.

1850 mintage 1,170,261
numismedia VF $2500.00 XF $3560.00 AU50 $5400.00

1872 mintage 251,850
numismedia F $2280.00 VF $2310 XF $2370 AU50 $2500.00

coinskelly - Looking at the last numbers, I am leaning towards the 1850.

I have been buying a lot of coins like these for about 3 years now .. my dad seems to like it too .. he keeps asking for more.
