Poll Question
I just won this 1876 Seated quarter off of ebay. It was listed as AU-BU, but as you can see, you can't tell from the pictures. I paid slightly just under EF40 money for it. When I receive the coin in my hands I'll post it up.

Will my gamble pay off?

I didn't vote because I really don't have an opinion if you did good or not. If you'd have paid $300 for a coin with those kind of pictures I would have said no.

Having said that, I think you will have done fine if it's not harshly cleaned, which is what a lot of distant pictures yield in hand....

Good luck, and don't forget to post some macros!!

I might be willing to take a shot with pictures like that, especially for quite a discount.

Well, if it turns out to be a dog, you're still not out too much. Every now and then I get a hunch that a coin might be considerably better than it appears to be based on the image, or that a coin with a small, fuzzy image might be a surprisingly nice one. If I don't put too much of a money into it, I'm sometimes willing to enter a lowball snipe and occasionally win. I'd say I'd reasonably happy with the coin about 75% of the time when I do this. I rarely return the ones I don't like, accepting those as "gambling losses."

I voted "yes" but only because I'm rooting for you. There's just no way to know from the pics if this coin has been cleaned, if it has the appropriate level of detail and luster, or if there are digs, scratches, etc. It's just a gamble, in other words, so if you're comfortable with the price you paid as a "worthwhile bet" then I'm behind you all the way! Finding good examples of even common date Seated Liberty coinage is getting harder all the time, it seems.

I voted yes although I wouldn't be surprised if it was EF. Anything close to AU would be a bonus. Hope you get a great looking coin (regardless of grade)!

I took a chance on a 1946 S/D OMM#1 this weekend. The pictures were not good but for .99 I could not resist.

I'd risk $60 on that, but I'm a risk-taker.

Looking forward to the in-hand pics.

Thanks for the support everyone. I guess I'll see when I get it in hand. The good thing is that if it is junk, I have a 3 day return policy.

I actually saw that coin, kind of randomly searching the bay. I figured it might be AU, but was wondering about cleaning. I think for the price you paid it will work out ok. Like you said, if it's a total dog you can send it back!

Good luck!

OK, I received the coin, and I do not think that it's anywhere near AU-BU. I'm thinking it's more of a VF and I'm not sure if that nick on her leg affects the value. The words quarter dollar seem weak. I'm starting to think that the minority was right, that it wasn't a good gamble. I'm not an expert on these, so I might be completely off?

I would probably call it an XF.
