Hello all, I have the opportunity to purchase the 1883 Hawaiian Dollar in raw from an antique store I seen visited during an out of town trip. I am wondering if anyone can show me website or the die markers for this coin in both mint state and proof. The store is not selling it cheap but its not near book and should grade well. Thank you for the help.

I would go to heritage auctions and look at some slabbed ones there. Pay attention to the denticles. Fakes usually show up in that area.

As far as I know there are no proofs. I don't know how many die pairs were used for the business strikes but I doubt of it was many. Sorry but I don't know of any listing of die markers to identify the die pairs.

I have some experience with the Hawaiians and know (the hard way) that there are some really good fakes out there. If I may ask, what is your estimate of the grade and the price the dealer is asking? PG

Coinfacts lists the Proof mintage at 26. Heritage sold a Proof 1883 Hawaiian dollar in 2007 for $33,350.

There is some excellent advice provided so far.

Hmm proof Hawiiians, I learned something today. Of course now I wonder where they were struck San Francisco like the rest of the Hawaiians, or Philadelphia where the dies were made.

Conder since you asked and I was curious too--I searched for the answer to where the Proofs were made.

I thought I'd find the answer in Breen's book on proofs made available online, but I didn't see the Hawaiian coins mentioned I probably missed it somehow.

Anyway, according to this site, the Proofs were made in Philadelphia. 6 sets were struck in September of 1883 with an additional 20 sets struck in 1884. http://coinsite.com/hawaii-coinage-1847-1883/
