I came across this 1994P Dime and am wondering what the heck happened.

First I noticed the right side rim on the OBV and noticed there was reeding on the Inside of the rim. The same is true of the REV but to a lesser extent and you can just barely make them out in the pictures I posted.

Also, I believe that there is a Retained Lamination peel on the rim above what appears to be a broken die in the 'R' in Liberty.

And can anyone tell me what has happened to the plating on both the OBV and REV?

It looks to me as if it was not prepared correctly prior to plating but I don't know.

Can anyone let me know what's going on and if this is common?

Anyway, here are some pictures to look at.

The reeding on the rim is a collar clash. Learn more here:

Good job Jay!

The area by the "R" on LIBERTY might be a struck through a piece of cladding from another coin. I would keep it in place. If it were larger then it might be worthy to remove and keep this as a struck though.

The discoloration is environmental damage.

Thanks guys! Excellent site you directed me too as well. Thank you.

DrDon.

What type of environmental damage would leave the cladding on the tops of the devices while damaging the fields to this extent?

Where the color is still visible on the fields it looks as though it were 'painted' on and you can see all the metal flow lines through out the coin.

Also, the cladding on the rim is still Very strong with the exception of the area where the 'peel' , 'strike through' has occurred.

The whole coin was affected. It is circulation that wore thought the toning on the coin. Sulfur tend to discolor coin yellowish. The wear removes the toning leaving it looking antiqued.

OK, Thanks. It just seemed weird to me that the fields were affected more then the high points of the devices.

I have already put it a 2 x 2 and put it aside. It's a Keeper for me!
