An 1897 Indian cent arrived today and I formed an immediate opinion. Please take a look at my photos and tell me what you see. I won't give my opinion and "lead" anyone to agreeing with me. My photos may be leading enough but still, I'd like some fresh opinions. Thanks!

So the warning flags to me are the sharp edges at the feathers, the lack of detail in the shield, the obverse letters seem narrow and almost pointed, and the wreaths are raised up. Not seeing the whole coin, it is hard to say for sure, but I would be suspicious that is is a fake.

It's a heavily whizzed coin--it has the same features as the coin in the link above, but a heavier treatment.
This one's a goner--I hope you can return it.

Thank you for the opinions! Whizzed is exactly what I saw.
Next questions.
In your opinion, is the purpose of whizzing a coin to artificially enhance the appearance of a coin?
Would you say that knowingly selling a whizzed coin a deceptive practice?

From the CCF Glossary:
whizzing
Term to describe the process of mechanically moving the metal of a lightly circulated coin to simulate luster. Usually accomplished by using a wire brush attachment on a high-speed drill.

Can be used to remove light corrosion, stains or verdigris from a coin. As the wire brush moves against raised devices it shoves tiny amounts of metal into a ridge or "windrow". The term whizzed comes from the sound of the power tool used with the wire brush.

Whizzing is also used to simulate the appearance of "cartwheel", done to make a brown, corroded coin appear to have MS luster.
This is a severe case of whizzing--if the seller knows their coins, they should be aware of it.

With the intricate details, the risk for error, the poor appearance, I cannot for the life of me understand why anyone would do this?!?
Besides, who has that much time?

Sadly a great example of a whizzed coin, raised metal along the devices.
All ccf members should see this.

My refund arrived today for this coin but I am still stuck for the return postage. The seller has over 850 coin sales on ebay but says he didn't know what whizzing was. My first lesson in a whizzed coin (Ouch!) came long before my 850th coin purchase.
