I got this in the mail as a nice bonus. It was labeled 1970S-1DO-005 but unsure of the markers. Is it just me (most likely) or is this something else? or maybe it is just not a match for the MDS which is the only one on CC I use to check it against. ----------- Edited by OcalaFlorida 04/12/2014 8:52 pm

Markers can be tricky. They are very helpful if they match up, but if they don't it doesn't necessarily mean it is the wrong attribution. It happens a lot in my experience. Circulation can eliminate or alter them, different die states usually have different markers (as you stated), etc. If you think it is something else, do you have another guess as to what it might be if it is not a 1DO-005?

That's an expensive coin for a bonus. Looks like a MS65, Small Date, which would be worth around $50.

Sudz, I am still new to this, I was trying to figure that out but I had no ideas maybe its just the markers are not matching up. I do have another DDO with no matching markers. I was just trying to verify and learn based off the markers the coin was from a trusted source. I have acquired several examples pf DDO and DDR which I use as a hands on learning tool. But examples like this help me to ask questions here. Which by far is the best learning tool to date.

I haven't looked at the markers for this variety in some time. Take a look at what Die stage (early, medium, late, very late) those markers were matched up with, and then look at the front and back of your coin. The only thing you should be looking for is a very good guess on what die state the coin your holding is. If it appears really really sharp and defined on the front and the back, then both dies could be EDS, or the beginning of a MDS. Die pairs get "divorced" if you will, some dies (obverse or reverse) last longer than the other and soon any markers may go out the window. That's why when people attribute coins, they try to find as many common markers on the obverse and reverse as possible. That way if the non-variety die is replaced, you'll still have a chance at a match.
Your coin in the picture appears to be MDS or LDS. I'd check 017 and 022 closely and see if those might match up. My concern is that the "70" may be suffering from ejection doubling. The die was resting o the top of the date and simply scraped off some of the top layer of the date. If I can find a 1970 example to show you what I mean, I will. I Think I have some MS and PF that show that effect. Then you can tell me if it looks like that, or is not even close.
The first question Coop is going to ask is........ Are the devices enlarged? The "70" on the date look funky,

Ah Phooie. I think I gave them to my daughter. I checked what I had, and they aren't here. I went as far as looking over a half roll of proofs and about 150 MS of the '70-S.

This is a large date. There is a lot of glare, so I'm not sure what were are looking at on this one? It looks like 005, but there is something below the 7 cross bar on the left side. So I'm not sure if it is reflection or what/where?
