Finally found one: ...in the 20-cent world coin bin at a store So if I give it to the Bank of Canada, will they reimburse me $1? NINJA EDIT: Yes, I know it's PMD, I bought it as a novelty. Edited by nalaberong 04/13/2014 12:39 am

Awesome. I work at a bank in the state and heard that you could pop the center out. When one finally came through our coin machine and got left in the reject bin, we tried everything we could to try to pop it but nothing would work. Neat pickup.

I think the popping out thing is best with the 1996 toonies. Your supposed to put them in the freezer, then they're easier to remove. I wouldn't advise it though...you're pretty much just wasting 2 bucks.

But what would be the point of doing so?

a while back the wife showed me a toonnie she had with the center popped out. and because I had recently seen one sell on ebay I thought why not. so I listed the center and it went for about $8 and I did get a positive feedback! I thought about selling the outer ring but I dont know what I did with it lol

We put the one at work in the freezer and in a snow bank during sub-zero temps. We heard you could but never figured it out. It was a 1996 one as well.
As for wasting 2 bucks, I work in the states and we don't do much with canadian currency but hold on to it. Sooo it was just a fun thing to try at work.

The picture posted above: by popping it out you can see that it's quite off-centered.

Most methods of removing the core will destroy the outer rim because it ¨locks¨ in from the press it gets.
But it´s .999 nickel bullion so why not MELT IT yayyyyy bullion value! (rolls eyes, end sarcasm)

Well, apparently some 1996 issues had locking problems. My uncle says that once one of his friends had one fall apart in their hands... maybe they brought it inside from a cold day too quickly?
What's really interesting is how small this core is - only a bit bigger than an old fish-scale. The toonie is one of the world's broadest bimetallic coins - that is, the outer ring is quite wide compared to the center.
