So a friend of mine told me he's selling some of his coins and wanted to know if I was interested in buying any.. So I went over to look at what he was getting rid of... most of it I had no interest in... but one thing caught my eye...

It was an EF 1968 dime ICCS graded - small date....

So my first reaction was to fall on the floor and start laughing ... Why did he pay for this coin to be graded.. I would have cost him at least 10x what the coin is actually worth...

I didn't laugh at him... and kept all remarks to myself but it really left me scratching my head.... so guys help me out here.. am I missing something here?

Furthermore what's the most obscure coin you saw graded that looked like it just didn't belong...?

Did he get it graded himself or did he buy it already graded from someone else? I've seen a number of low value coins in TPG holders floating around lately. My theory is that somebody who doesn't know much about coins inherits a collection and just gets it graded in bulk because they don't know what else to do with it. But that's just speculation on my part.

I really didn't want to raise the issue and cause any embarrassment on my friends behalf... My biggest assumption is that he thought it may have been a large date and had it sent in to be graded... but that's only my best guess.

Actually, it was the 1969 with the 'small and large' dates

The 1968s had came from 2 mints, the RCM and the Philadelphia Mint.

It costs more to have 45 coins graded than it does for 50. People will throw in whatever they have sometimes to reach the next discount level.
