Double check if there were mint sets. High grade Jeffersons in years where MSs weren't offered makes these more desirable. Sorry I don't know offhand - read that here a while back so I keep an eye out for all AU specimens 80s nickels.

I don't know rupester - I recall a thread here a few weeks (2 months?) ago talking about which 80s nickels are worth saving. I think that someone noticed Red Book (?) pricing for some 80s were higher than others. A member noted that some years that high grade coins only came from circulation business strikes. Since then, I'll cull out the AU 80s nickels with nearly FSs. I'm guessing I may have found 4-5 that fit that definition so it does appear that it's easier to find older AU coins that some just 25 years old.

@eagle lol. The ones that have full steps in the ms 65 grades and higher are where they have a nice value. Not easy to find though.

@rup there were mint sets in 84.

@eaglefly:

Full steps = on the reverse of the coin, the steps of Monticello need to be clearly identifiable and without noticeable flaws.
MS 65 = Mint State 65, a grading term
AU = another grading term, "About Uncirculated", meaning a very nice coin generally meaning that it could be direct from the mint with little to no circulation.

Lots more to learn if you do a little searching.

The '86D in ms+ is the most desireable, after the '82&'83, both circ mints.
But generally, what others have said.
