I received in the mail yesterday an 1833 LC. As I was opening the package, I noticed this guy was a very heavy smoker. The entire outside and inside was of a very strong cigarette smell. Upon closer examination, the coin itself reeked of the smell..bad Would acetone help? I don't want this to go into my Dansco like this. Thanks! swcoin.ecrater.com

Dang, I guess acetone would help but if the coin was exposed to this kind of stuff, maybe there will be long term repercussions. Pics?

Yes... I purchased some very nice Canadian Large Cents from a seller, and the seller must have been the biggest cigar smoker ever- The package itself reeked even through it had aired out in my mailbox and enroute, and the coins did as well... I gave them a quick acetone bath, where they came out fine, and even sent one in to PCGS where it came back with an excellent grade... There was no "UNC Details, Smoke Odor" :)

I believe an acetone soak will take away any residual nicotine on the coin, however I cannot say how it will affect the color on a copper coin, should be all right. Shoot an I'm over to BadThad and ask our resident chemist.

Thanks guys! The coin has an original even tan/brown color of a VF LC.

This, but I'd still consider it an ideal candidate for an acetone soak. Just keep it separated from bright sunlight and water vapor, and you'll be fine.
