I received in the mail yesterday an 1833 LC. As I was opening the package, I noticed this guy was a very heavy smoker. The entire outside and inside was of a very strong cigarette smell. Upon closer examination, the coin itself reeked of the smell..bad

Would acetone help? I don't want this to go into my Dansco like this.

Thanks!

Dang, I guess acetone would help but if the coin was exposed to this kind of stuff, maybe there will be long term repercussions. Pics?

Yes... I purchased some very nice Canadian Large Cents from a seller, and the seller must have been the biggest cigar smoker ever- The package itself reeked even through it had aired out in my mailbox and enroute, and the coins did as well... I gave them a quick acetone bath, where they came out fine, and even sent one in to PCGS where it came back with an excellent grade... There was no "UNC Details, Smoke Odor" :)

I believe an acetone soak will take away any residual nicotine on the coin, however I cannot say how it will affect the color on a copper coin, should be all right. Shoot an I'm over to BadThad and ask our resident chemist.

Warning, some of the color may be nicotine staining and may come off in the acetone.

This, but I'd still consider it an ideal candidate for an acetone soak. Just keep it separated from bright sunlight and water vapor, and you'll be fine.
