Sometimes I'll pay close attention to a blurry picture on ebay, because it might reveal a variety. Here's a coin I picked up today for nearly nothing ($3 inc/shipping). The top picture is the Snow-3 1891/1891; the lower my coin. The date positions do look similar, and if I squint, I almost see some markers for the S-3. What do you think--do I have a chance at getting a nice RPD, or am I seeing things? I'll follow up when the coin arrives. Edited by DVCollector 04/13/2014 6:39 pm

Number placement in regard to denticles looks way off

Yeah...I wondered about the date/denticle alignment too, but I also look at the "1" in relation to the bust point. By my eyes, sometimes the apparent width of the denticles throws me off when comparing two coins. Compare relative positions between another S-3 picture. Most likely, I struck out--but I still have a cheap IHC.

I would say not likely, but I do see what you are seeing. Could be it. I think the denticles match fairly well, the ebay coin is much more worn than the example.

I know little about IHC's, but comparing the two photos, there certainly looks to be a notable difference between the configuration of the denticles.

I don't see much of a point speculating further w/ more pictures, since I've already posted the best details I have. See my updated picture for position comparison. The coin grades around F-12. Sometimes I slam-dunk these; other times I bomb. It's like a game for me--looking for clues in poor photos. I'll update when the coin arrives.

It's close, but I'd say probably not. I hope you prove me wrong.

IMO I think the denticles and position of the date is spot on.

Yeah...the date position is one of the reasons it got my attention. But it's either one or nothing--I'll post results when it arrives.

You got it--it's like gambling with a small advantage. Do I also see something inside the loops of the "9"?

Well...it came, and it's a negative. Nothing risked--nothing gained.
