They are different mint mark styles.

From the pictures they all look like the small S to me. The S is much larger on the large S and there is a weakness on the bottom loop. Nice pictures Coop.

Use the window on the Monticello to determine proper registration on the coin. You'll note in Coops (cointalks) pic's that the Large S is lower in the field to the right of the Monticello (window sill splits the MM). The small S will be above the window sill. It looks like you have 2 Large S nickels pictured above.

The mint marks are placed by hand and can vary in location.

Thanks, But I am still confused it might just be my worn circulation cbr nickels. I understand and can spot on pictures of better grade ones like the examples in Coop picture.. Large S* Font has weakness in bottom loop of S * Large S is lower in the field to the right of the Monticello (slips the mm) so 2 are lower the window? but the mm is not weak in bottom loop

Just my opinion but they all look small. Notice how tight the small 'S' is and how loose the large 'S' with the weakness at the lower loop.

Ocala - do a search on the internet. I recall reading an article that discussed how to spot the large vs. small. Based on what I recall, the two you have pictured have the correct position. The mint marks are subtly larger/smaller, but fonts were slightly different. I think that the combined information here is about what was used to establish type, just not clear on the finer details since I examined my '41 Ss some time ago. Any new find though I use the window placement I noted above.
Good luck!

Think they are all small 'S' with two enlarged slighted by wear and die just they go under the window line. I am going to get out my rolls of War Nickels to to have maybe 30-40 of them to compare. I just found a lamination error in my stack I missed as well.

I 'Think' pictures 1, 2, and 4 are the small var. I really cant tell about the 3rd picture. Funny thing. I JUST found a 1941S, small mm about 15 min's ago. Great timing for the question.

They are all small S. When you find a large S you'll know. Use coops pic to differentiate until you find one that you can keep as a reference.

I really don't think that these are too difficult to find. I had about 20 rolls of 41-S nickels here. I went through them all some time ago. I came out with just over a roll of the large S mint mark. I just now had a partial roll setting on the table with 12 nickels. One of which is the large S.
Still Lookin
