Jefferson Nickel Re-Engraved Design Varieties

Anyone have photos any more info on them? Are they rare?
Are they only on proofs or business strikes?

I have been able to find a lot of info on the markers on error sites like VV but next to no images on these varieties besides a article on the 1938.

Jefferson Nickel Re-Engraved Design Varieties

  • 1938 Re-engraved Obverse lettering

  • 1952 Re-engraved Obverse ribbon

  • 1953 Re-engraved Obverse ribbon

  • 1954 Re-engraved Obverse ribbon

There was a article on the 1938 but that's about it?

All of the re-engraving was done on proof dies, there were way too many business strike dies to give them that level of attention. I do remember a Numismatic News article on this subject from several years ago although I was not able to find it after a brief search through the Numismaster.com archives.

There is a book called "The Jefferson nickel Analyst". This book does contain information about design updates and some varieties. If interested in Jeffersons you may want to locate one.

Ken Potter has one listed on his site. But as Bio mentioned they are on proof nickels.

The article you linked is the extent of my knowledge -- it appears that ALL 1938 proofs were re-engraves somewhere or other.
