It is my understanding that it all depends on who you ask on what constitutes a Low serial number. I've read only 1-100 are rare, while some sources say notes 1-1000 carry a premium. I seem to get the most conservative input from members on this site, so heres my questions about the bill I have in mind. I recently pulled a 2009 series 1$ bill from circulation with a serial # 252. G00000252B to be precise. Based on ebay inquiries, I have no doubt this will be the route I take in selling this bill. I realize the ebay market is VERY generous in regards to labeling a serial # "low". My last search did not yield any results of a 2009 1$ bill with a lower seriAl number then 252.

Before I part ways with this note via auction, I would greatly appreciate as much input from Coincommunitiy members about its potential premium. I realize condition is a huge factor so I've posted a pic. I got 2 questions about the note.... 1) is it worth my time and money to get this graded before I sell it. 2) is this not technically considered a fancy note given that the digits 252 read the same backwards as they do forward? I figure thats a stretch but it never hurts to ask right?. Thanks for everyones time & input.

The issue with note collecting is that there aren't many collectors. Few collectors means less demand and less demand means unstable prices. Plus, since there are only about 1-3 thousand serial number combinations that are considered "special" in any given run, there aren't going to be many bills that you can benchmark yours against to get an accurate idea of its worth.

Personally, I would be willing to pay $1.50-$2 for a bill like yours. I know some on here would be willing to go as high as $10 and hardcore number collectors might pay more. Keeping in mind that it'll probably cost you $1-2 to get rid of this bill via ebay, how much are you willing to sell it for? I wouldn't expect to see much more than $1 profit from any ebay sale.

You are more than welcome to test your luck on ebay, but I'd agree that there's no harm in emailing the company that John1 linked to.

Thanks for the input and I do appreciate the offer. I stand corrected about not finding any that have a lower serial on ebay. I found a couple. One was significantly lower ( I believe # 42) with a buy now option around 160$. Also, there was one in the 300 range with an asking price around 60$. If I were to let it go at any rate, Id be comfortable in the 30$ range.... Only because this is the 1st bill in my collection that even carries a premium and I'm brand new to the thrill of currency/ coin collecting. The more thought I put into this acquisition, the more I'm getting attached to it. I think I may roll the dice on selling it on ebay for an amount that is a bit out of reason (lets say 55$), and if no one bids, ill just hold onto it . I'm not trying to collect more then its worth out of someones pocket.... Its just that owning it is starting to accumulate in sentimental value to myself .

Thanks again.....

Also.... Could anyone tell me if this note falls under the category of a radar note since the 3 digits read the same backward as they do forward?

Your pic isn't that clear so it's really hard to tell the condition of the note... but I will take a stab at a few of your other questions and comments.

1) 252 is considered low.. anything under 1000 is low but condition is KING....

2) while 252 is a RADAR number (you can read it back and forth the same way and order) all the zeros prior to the 252 negate this note as being a true radar number..

3) If you put it up on ebay with some really good pictures of the note from many angles and put a comfortable selling price that is your right! If someone wishes to pay you for that fine.. if not.. no loss on the buyers part so who cares right?

4) unless you believe this note to be uncirculated you're best to leave it ungraded. The cost of getting this sort of note graded will take too big of a bite into your margins.. Just use good photos of the note raw.

Let's just say this note was in EF condition... and that generally notes in EF condition that are low serials sell for approx $80 when they're graded.... and with good photos they will sell for $60-75... the $5 - 20 difference in sale price will not pay for what it's going to cost you to get the note graded therefore you actually will lose money!

As for how much you can expect to get for this note..... I really have no clue... I collect canadian notes... I personally was happy to pay up to $600 for a set of notes all with the same serial # of 204... (of course that my area code) and having one note of each denomination with all matching serials I thought was very cool and was happy to pay a premium...

Alas I was out bid....

With just your one note.... my best guess is that you could get $30 for it with out difficulty if it's in really nice condition... but I'm just throwing darts here...

Personally if this is your first interesting find... I would keep it... it has greater value it will be something you may really appreciate later on as you look back upon your collecting

What ever your choice.. good luck my friend

AGCoinAu- You have been more then helpful and I greatly appreciate that. You cant put a price tag on someones word/opinion... And I assure you, talk is cheap on my side of our borders. That being said, I genuinely appreciate the time you've lent and the knowledge you shared. Your input was thorough and met my level of understanding , given that this IS a new hobby, and a very dynamic one at that. Thanks again.

I love this forum... I am happy to be helpful... I only wish I could've been MORE helpful...

I seriously hope that you enjoy this hobby and if you have any more questions feel free to drop me a line... I don't always look on the U.S. boards... I kinda stick to the canadian ones mostly as that's what I collect...

Keep me posted as to how things are... take care my friend
