This looks cut and dry to me, with the clad proof sets still for sale I'm wondering how rare they will be. Thoughts. Edited by Oneeye 04/17/2014 07:15 am

Here is a side by side of the image from the mint and the coin you posted. Looks possible.

Comparing your Shenandoah to mine, it DOES look doubled die. What a find, send it to be graded!

I would send it to John Wexler. He is up to date on these new varieties. Go to his site and see what he thinks.

I only signed up at the mint and bought them because I live in Shenandoah County, and I wanted the coins from my home. Excellent. I will update when I have an attempt to get it authenticated as a DD and not a Mechanical or other lesser variety.

CONGRATS on the find! Seeing this thread made me go check the 2 2014 clad sets I have and on one of the sets, the dime has a crater on the upper right reverse with remnants of what looks to be a struck through but will have to get pics up to get the expert opinions... Check your dimes as well as quarters.. will post pics to this thread hopefully tmrw.. Till then

I don't think it is a doubled die. Looks more like slight shifting of the die between the two strikes.

I've sent proofs in like this and they just come back as a graded proof with no variety listed. A proof is "allowed" more than one strike, and that's what I am seeing here. I don't have the analytical software / measurement software to see if the spacing is consistent all / most of the way around the coin. The good Ole' "Ten Picks" I used to use are too big for these pics, plus they don't bend in a curve. You never know what a TPG service will say. WE have to think Outside the box, due to the way these coins are struck. They aren't struck in the 1950's through 1980's methods anymore. If I had the coin in hand, I'd send it into a TPG inside the holder and have them attribute it that way, being specific that you want JUST this Quarter looked over. Send them a bnote / call them up as well, and explain the situation, if that's a route you wish to follow.

The problem is a TPG will only attribute a known and cataloged die variety so if you send them a new discovery, they will only list it as a normal coin. Another problem is that NGC and PCGS only attribute a select list of die varieties so even if this was a new and recognized discovery, they would not slab it as such anyway. However, ANACS(and I think ICG) will attribute any die variety that is in a published reference book.

How about sending images of the coin to CONECA? They would have an idea of what it is and where to go from there.

Interesting how the "L" in LIBERTY shows more notching than letters closer to the center of the coin. That might be explained by the die being rotated slightly between hubbings.

The coin is off getting graded. I believe this particular coin may have some Strike Doubling and doubled die effects all at once. I am currently hunting for another. If there are more with the same attributes then there will be a case to be made and I will get them out to Wexler and Coneca. Just picked up a roll of 40 clad proofs off of the bay. You all have my permission to do the same....
