It wasn't struck like that. It has been altered. I agree it may have been a Dryer Coin. That would explain the long scratches on the obverse.

Go to "Search Coin Community" (upper left of screen) and enter ' Dryer Coin'. There are a lot of good threads on it and a lot of good photos --- so many that I couldn't choose one for a link here.

The rounded edge of the nickel. The only way this could occur is by something hitting the coin on the rim. Falling in a clothes dryer or hitting the coin with a spoon on the edge will cause this. If the planchet was too small, the rim would be flattened. Here is an example of a Nickel struck on a Cent planchet: Note that the planchet wasn't centered in the chamber, You can see the rim on the 3:00 to 5:00. But where the die was over the edge of the coin, it flattened the devices/rim setup flat. On your coin the devices are coved by the rim. The outside edge of the die would have left that rim area raised beyond the devices. That is not happening on your coin. It has been altered.

Welcome Brandon. I don't know how to do the cool welcome sign and I always forget to look at post count. Those Dryer Coins are hard to understand but from what I have read it has to be a really hot industrial dryer, maybe a laundromat?

7TF Above the 'quick reply' box and just below the banner ad is a group of options. Select "Reply to Topic". Took me months to find it. All the emoticons and icons for inserting quotes, etc. is easy to find there.
