While cleaning out my recently deceased grandmothers house I found a veritable treasure chest full of old coins, poundsof silver quarters, nickels and dimes, Morgan silver dollars, 95 lbs of pennies and even more.

I am new to this but could anyone please help me identify and approximately grade this 1854 gold coin?

wow, quite a hoard of possibly very valuable coins there!
can you post a picture if the back (reverse)? It's necessary to assign the coin a grade and value.
And, please please do not clean the coins. Don't wipe them or try to get the "tarnish" gone with polishing. If you clean them, they will lose their value.

That's a Liberty Head $5 Half Eagle (No motto on reverse) struck at Philadelphia-no mint mark

You might move this post to the US Classic Coins grading forum which might get you more replies to what this coin grades.

Sorry for the loss of your grandmother but it looks like you have stumbled onto a valuable find. Take your time to find out what you have. Usually there are many common coins in these kind of finds but there is always the chance for a rare coin too such as your gold piece.

Yes, my condolences for the loss of your grandmother. She left quite a numismatic legacy! Were you ever aware of her interest in coins?

No my wife, siblings, parents and myself had bodies. The working theory is that my grandfather was a small business owner in the 50s... And he must have started taking Corning's and setting them aside. I've been saying "grandma's" out of habit... As my grandfather died a long time ago
