Yep In my opinion it is slab worthy. looks like an MS example most likely MS 62-64RD from the photos can't see enough there for a 65 but otherwise a great coin and should be pricey if it makes 64 perhaps around the $700-800 mark.

I've had a look at other 1912 slabbed hp on the web I believe this coin to be better quality than all of the 64's and a Google search of '1912 half penny gem' brings up a dealer not sure if I can name them but they have a ms65 pcgs cert number 20360764 I believe my coin is at least equal to this one at a minimum... I don't think the photos do the coin justice but best I can do. Any reason why you think there isn't enough for ms65 @ ohmyflorin thanks. Also which would be the better TPG pcgs or ngc?

Yeah i'd be very surprised if it did'nt get 65RD & PCGS is the top TPG.

The coin looks superb. Cannot see any faults outside of some minor scratches in front of the kings mo and behind the head and looks full red.
I would slab it in a heartbeat. Might make MS65 Red.
Post an update of the slabbing result when the coin gets back from the plastics factory.

Very nice coin. PCGS is much better for Australian coins, while NGC has a very good worldwide reputation, PCGS has a stronger presence in Australia so for liquidity purposes I'd recommend PCGS.

Primarily some marks on the fields is what made me feel that way and it is tough to get a 65 in general on these older coins. In terms of a recommended TPG definitely PCGS absolutely excellent company in every way.

I'll correct my earlier guess based on the second set of photo's I would put it at MS64.

Try this link it'l show you the descriptors for PCGS grading. http://www.pcgs.com/grades.html
Here is a link also to a youtube video made by PCGS to explain the grading techniques and around halfway through goes through the MS grades is very informative. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Apn-kYEl-Xw

Thanks everyone for the feedback. A lot of the small marks are on the plastic holder not the coin itself except for the one in front of the kings mo. Is there any places in Victoria who can send this coin to pcgs on my behalf or honest collectors?
The coin is actually a baldwins example it came from a downies auction in 1994 as gem to prooflike however I don't have the original paperwork. Do downies do written gradings?
The obverse of this coin has the tiny scratch near the kings mo and other marks are on the plastic sleeve. The reverse in my opinion is flawless. After looking at the ms65 graded coin I believe my reverse is of better quality with the obverse being about the same interestingly the ms 65 coin has the same tiny scratch next to the kings mo aswell as a few others.

In terms of sending coins of I would recommend Eric of Drake Sterling as well as Walter of NumisBid both for top notch service and excellent coins. In terms of the images it is harder to grade over a computer image and much easier to grade in hand tho if you would like more accurate grading opinions take it out of the holder and give it another shot with the camera.

It is a shame with the documentation tho. The provenance would have given it quite some value. You can try getting the catalog and comparing the images to try and match the marks tho I don't know how you would go in terms of confirming the provenance in terms of that. Others should be able to aid significantly more on this part than I can at the moment.

By the way what do you mean by written gradings?

Your best option is to send it to Eric Eigner at Drake Sterling and he'll send it to
PCGS for you and you'll get it bsck in about 3 months.Don't worry about the provenance
at the PCGS holder will speak for itself.I can tell you that Eric's service is impeccable
and he'll explain everything for you and then it's just a waiting game. After that you won't
be wondering what grade your coin actually is

I wouldn't worry about the provenance, almost every brilliant red 1912-H half penny is Ex-Baldwins.
