I agree, it does look like
Machine Doubling. Check areas on the dime for the similar looking damage on other letters and numbers on the reverse. It should go basically from the south side of the letters and head toward the north of the coin. It can be very light or even heavy.
IF it was a RPM, it MIGHT have showed a lower "square" corner on the bottom left side if the "D" or might have had a Split Serif if it was a strong repunch. A split Serif is an angled line that splits the hook or corner of a coin.
Being that the coin is circulated and 50 years old, other clues that once were there may no longer be.
Here is a pic of one. This may be a bit dramatic, but at least its an example to look over. This one has potentially three mint marks. One WEST, then the Primary one in the Center and one EAST/SOUTH EAST.
Some you will only see ONE extra punchings, much like the one to the WEST.
