I'm starting to get interested in IHC varieties. Have been reading every post & looking for a reference book. I'm also scanning ebay to try to identify possible varieties. I located the following coin earlier this week. It was scheduled to end this morning so thought I might take a shot at it. Being cheap & lacking knowledge It's past what I would have been comfortable paying. Is this an example of the 1880 broken 8's? http://www.ebay.com/itm/38088351137....m1423.l2649

It looks like both 8's are broken. If they are it would be an S4 broken '88' There is an S4a and S4b which differ due to date position in relation to the bust. Your coin doesn't seem to quite match either. The digits in the date are closer together than the above 2 examples. My attribution guide is not current. Maybe there are more examples of this variety that my guide doesn't have. Hopefully others with a more current guide will chime in. If you are interested in FE and IHC varieties I highly recommend that you invest in Snow's attribution guide. I believe you can buy either an online guide or a hard copy.

Looks like the first is S-4 and the second S-3. Nice pickups--I would have bid on both, if I had seen them. I bought a coin from Vette once--it turned out to look better in-hand.

The one I linked to ended up at $14 with shipping. I figured I'd try at about half that due to lack of confidence in attribution skills & knowledge of value. Is the $14 (including shipping) more along the lines of what I could expect to pay? Didn't see the S3 but it sold for an amount I'd have been willing to risk.

I don't think this variety carries much of a premium. I wouldn't pay much more than whatever the grade of the coin goes for.

The first coin, which appears to be an original-looking ~VF30, is more than reasonable for $14, considering the variety.

I had the one that sold for $14 one on my watch list and would have gone up to $16 but I forgot to bid.

This one looks promising, but the reverse looks pretty weak/damaged.

Another S-4, just a bit more banged up.

This is a common variety and should not warrant much of an additional premium. In high Mint State condition, there might be a small premium, but not much. Here is mine, S-4b. Paid $250 for this one in MS65BN. I bought the coin for the beautiful colors, not the variety. The variety was a bonus.

Thanks for the info. Will check out the link. I have volume 1 of Snow's attribution guide that covers FEC & will check into other volumes.
Nice looking coin RedRaider.

Buy his electronic guides. Those are up to date and will pay for themselves over time with varieties you are able to pick.
