I originally bought this coin because it has the King's die-clashed image, facing left, on the reverse. Now I'm wondering if it is a 1673/2 overdate also.
What do you think?

Thanks,
Bill

That's quite the dramatic clashed die bust of King Charles on the reverse. Unfortunately, the clashed die seems to have affected the 3 in the date.

It does look like there are the remnants of a 2 under the 3 on your coin, but on this example from acsearch.info the 2 is not nearly so evident under the 3 as on your coin.

I'm not sure what to say about it.

Thanks, Paul, for the 1673/2 listing from St. James Auctions. I too have trouble seeing any part of a 2 in their picture.

Your thought about the clash on my piece affecting the date is interesting.

Perhaps there is an even better picture of this overdate somewhere else on the Web.

Well, its too close to the clash to be caused by the A, so it seems to be on the obverse die to begin with. Its shaped like a 2...perhaps find a 1672 crown to compare the numeral to?

So I cobbled together the dates from an 1672, 1673, and your coin.
Despite the wear/clash on yours, it doesn't take too much imagination to see the diagonal of the 2 crossing the bottom portion of the 3, or the 2's outer curve under the 3--arrows.

I'm convinced. It is an overdate!

Many thanks!
