Found this in a box of nickels I was searching last night. The obverse has some minor remnants of the letters around the edge (none of it readable). The outline of Jefferson's head is more distinct than the image shows. All around the head (particularly between 1 in 3 o'clock ) there are flow line rays the radiate out in parallel lines from center towards the rim. There are no signs of Monticello on the obverse at all. Would love to hear what you all think this is...thanks in advance

Looks like a Greaser to me. The rim doesn't look right for a capped die,I'm no pro though. John1

The rim is about 10% thicker on edge than a regular nickel...is easily noticable

That is a struck through a late stage capped die. Very nice find.

I try and catalog all my finds for what they are, date, and value. What would something like this be valued at?

Tough question. You might do a search on ebay and catalog several auctions and average the final completed prices and see what that is. The more the better for averages. It kind of a how bad does someone want it. BIN prices are not a good indicator, unless that is what someone actually paid.

The biggest clue for these is to look at the rim. The rim is rounded on the struck through examples because the edge of the die is covered with the die cap. On a Struck Through Grease error the rims are sharp.

I think I saw one of these go for $25 a few months ago.

Possible. Struck though grease is a lot less in demand.

I have a SOMEWHAT similar nickel. Somewhat. I was planning to make a new post as well but I'll start her; 2006 P Jefferson nickel on left 1996 nickel on right is strictly for lighting comparison. 2006 is about 20% thicker, normal diameter Its just that the reverse is completely dull in color. No shiny! It has no other errors as far as I can tell. Its not from circulation nor has it been anywhere 'odd' since 2006. I don't know how to define this exactly. I'd love some help please.

Here is the front of same coin. Obverse is normal. Not dull.

I have the same nickel. Did they find out if it was a capped die or grease error? Not sure if I sent the email correctly, just joined... Thanks.
