have been out of the coin hunting game for some time now. I have since moved to Tucson, AZ, north west just below Marana, from San Diego , CA. Since moving here, going on 4 months now, I get a sense that there might be more people coin roll hunting, given the age and economic demographic. Anyone here from the area coin hunt, specifically halves and dimes for silver? I would assume there would be more silver here because of the older demographic, any opinions? Thanks

Now, you will have to become a gem and mineral specimen collector as well. The World's largest gem and mineral show is held in Tucson, about mid February each year.
My daughter-in-law grew up in SD; she now lives in Sydney, and has learned to drive on the wrong side of the road, as the Pommies do.

i escaped! yes indeed. things are, how shall we say, less expensive here? hehe. I guess all the old retirees scare me. they probably have a lot of expendable coin hunting cash. however maybe a lot are just clueless to what they have and they will dump the silver anyway
as to becoming a gemologist, not sure. I used to be into gems growing up. might be something fun for the kids to enjoy too.

Don't know about the prevalence of coin roll hunting vis a vis what goes on in San Diego, but Tucson has a number of coin shops in which I consistently find good buys. Most have very active auction boards, too. Also three coin shows a year.

Many years ago I graduated from the University of Arizona in Tucson ... so welcome to my old stomping grounds.
Curious why you would believe the roll silver hunting would be better there ... any updates?

There were a few coin shops back in the early 1980's when I frequented Tucson, ANA mid year show in 1982 was amazing, where I met and became friends with Elliot Goldman (R.I.P.) Rick Snow worked with Elliot and a nicer coin dealer I can't imagine. I'd love to be there instead of here in the Dallas area, just for the Astronomy! My friend Adam Block runs the Mount Lemmon Sky Observatory for ASU, that is a fun trip, he holds shows on the night sky all the time, might want to look it up if you are ever looking for something to do at night with the family. I've been considering moving to the Sierra Vista area for awhile now, that or back to North San Diego, CA. Congrats on the move, hope all is going well for you SDcoinguy!

Make sure that a/c is workin' SD, it's starting to heat up. Being a bit north should help, but definitely keep those coins in a cool room and away from the 110's coming down the pike. Go up past Catalina near the Triangle Y Ranch Camp and do some caving at Peppersauce if you need to cool off a bit. Lots of retirees, especially up in the NW area where it's cooler. Hit the banks on North Oracle and there is now one up further in Catalina proper if you want to go up that far, I think it's a Wells Fargo, with a smaller branch inside the grocery store. Catalina has a couple of retiree trailer parks filled to the brim and they all shop in that little center up there, or they go down Tangerine to Walmart, or further to Frys. Banks in those centers as well. Watch out for the oldsters on their 4-wheelers and golf carts - they're street-legal there. My Grandpa is 92 and still takes his 4 wheeler for a morning run. Good luck and let us know how you do!

Welcome to Tucson!
I'm on the east side of Tucson, and I know I'm not the only one who hunts through rolls of JFKs. I haven't found any silver or silver clad halves in quite some time. I did score two silver dimes from my first dime box.
BTW, my favorite coin dealer here is Old Pueblo Coins on Speedway. I have purchased a *LOT* of silver coins from them over the years.....not so much now as I did back in 2003.
