What are some of the most desirable mint errors? I know that coins struck on the wrong planchet are desirable. I know that double struck coins are desirable, especially with double dates. What else do people want? I have a bunch of errors and am considering selling some on ebay, but I need to know which ones people want. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Rhonda, post some photos of some of the major errors you have and I'll let you know how collectable they are.

How does one post photos on this forum?

Basically, I need to know categories. Like, I figure clipped coins are not desirable, but double stuck coins are. And off centers with no dates are not desirable, but off centers with full dates are.

See what I mean? Can you folks let me know categories? What are you looking for in a mint error?

All of the above would sell on ebay. Clipped, double strikes, off centers, no dates. Good pictures are the key to selling varieties or errors.

chrsb is right, all of those would sell on ebay. the clips would of course get the least. start them at 99 cents and they will get many bids.

what years are you talking. I am always interested in nice errors.

Lately there is a large boom in the error coin buisness. As the amount of normal coinage for collectors vanishes due to many reasons, other forms of coin collecting becomes more prevelant. Normal coinage vanishes as the amount of collectors increases, coins are lost, distroyed, made into charms and many other reasons. Error coins is just that subject for those that can not or will never finish a set of say, Mercury dimes. The type of error coins has grown with the hobby. Now there are many books written covering all the types of error coins that are constantly being found. I go to numerous coin shows and at many there are dealers that now specialize in just error coins. One dealer has vertually thousands of nothing but error coins. Many are very minor in nature but still command a decent dollar. Examples are the various type of offsets. some are so minor I used to throw back into circulation but now sell for several dollars each. There is a web site called coppercoins.com where it is discribed that almost every single year of the Lincoln Cent there are several types of errors.
As to which ones are the most valuable. That is purely by popularity. For example the famous 1955 double die Lincoln Cent can sell for thousands of dollars yet a 1942 double die is almost unknown and would hardly bring more than a few dollars. The 1972 Licoln Cent is climbing up there in value but no where near the 55 due to popularity. Offsets can vary dramatically in value. A massive offset with no date is usually only a few dollars but with a date can run into the hundreds, naturally pending condition and popularity of who is buying.
If you look in the rear of the Famous Red Book, 2008 edition, pages 386 and up there is a large description of many of the types and approximate values. Of course again let me stress the importance of popularity of certain types and denominations.
As to selling them on ebay, check out what is there now and that should give you an idea of what to charge or start with. If you have access to a coin show, there too you would get a decent education of the error coins values. I collect error coins and have many, many types. Good luck

What do you have, I would be interested in wrong planchet, double dies, and probably any other Lincolns you might have.

I have a nickel on a penny planchet, two double strikes (both pennies, one 1995 ds&dd and one 1999 ds). One 25c missing obv clad layer. Bunches of off centers. A few clips. Some just look so ugly that they are cute. None of these I am sure about until I send them into NGC for grading. I buy coins that look like errors to me and then NGC lets me know for sure. My real love is old coins, as the person above described. But I spend a LOT of money for a single coin so I cannot collect the old ones very often, if ya know what I mean. Why weren't we all born with the last name Rockerfeller. Or Hilton.

I share your passion. Nothing like a Cent variety to get my heart pounding.

I, too like the "boo-boos". I have a whole slew of the cracks, and/or spikes, a bunch of off-centers, with, and without dates, both US, and foreign, (Mexico), many DDO / DDR's, in Mexican coinage, clashes, etc. The link given, above, has been made a part of my tool bar. I didn't realize those "cotten-picken things" were worth so much money! I don't sell on ebay, but have purchased a few things, some worth the money, and others were little more than trash. But a "Newbie" by any other name is still a "newbie". Some of us just never quite learn! So we buy, but not as often as before. You can't win 'em all, but it is worth a try!
I might add to Justcarl' remarks above, that the site he mentions, coppercoins.com, also has the largest photo base for varieties, (cent), of any I've seen, anywhere. They do "other coin/metals", too but the prime is COPPER. Easy to join, and well worth a look! Like Coop's 1955S-1MM-001!

Vaslin: That is one of my sweet ones. I prefer the 1949 ones as that is my birth year.

You clearly have a nack for taking photographs!

My flatbed scanner pictures just aren't cutting it.

If you have a lot of one particular error for a year, here's the best way to get rich (or make a mint, so to speak):

Convince Whitman (or their competitors) to make a spot for it in the next addition of the folder.

Convince the famous RedBook to give it it's own line.

Both are guaranteed to create massive demand for your coins.
