This coin has gorgeous toning which I am unable to capture with my photography skills

Dark chocolate brown backgrounds, and golden brown on the relief, throughout the reverse. On the obverse, backgrounds away from the relief are slightly lighter in colour.

I'm going to guess... VG?

Thanks!

What do you look for when you grade? I always seem to undergrade.

Better to undergrade than to overgrade, lessens the chances of overpaying.
You could buy "Standard Grading Guide for Canadian & Colonial Decimal Coins" available at coin dealers and often on ebay.
You could study ICCS graded coins from pics on ebay.

When grading I generally look at the obverse first... to see the details in the design versus the wear on high points of the coin...

If there's no wear in any of the details at all... I start to look at the fields...

There's a web site that's called coinisouer (or something close to that) it's great to show comparison of each obverse and a wide range of grades...

I also enjoyed using "Standard guide for Canadian and colonial decimal coins" 1999 - it show the points of a coin that typically will experience wear first... and in each grade respectively...

Thanks I forgot the web page and was too lazy to look it up to do a copy paste... Plus I have put other links to other coin pages here before and had my wrists slapped so I figured that was enough that someone would be able to figure it out

I'll probably invest in the guide if it's not too expensive.

Thanks for the site! Quite a few pics on there.

The reason I undergeade, I guess, is because I look at a when I look at a coin, the wear and scratches are what I notice first. Then I think, "It can't reach this grade, this part of the coin looks worse than what's on the photos."
