So I'm sure many folks have noticed the 'halo effect' on modern Zincoln cents. The cause perhaps of many false alarms regarding the identification of a DDO or RPM variety. For some reason, 1984 seems to be a banner year for the halo...or? Here's a 1984 but it appears that there is a ghost like image appearing to the SW of the 8 in the date. It really appears that their is relief in the coin, catching light, and throwing shadows. So fellow coin hobbyists, what is it that plagues the 1984 cents?

That is the beginning of Die Deterioration. It gets worse as the die ages.

Just like wrinkles on seniors, it is the way the die shows aging.

Hi Coop - thanks for the input. I'd like to think I'm working on the halo at this point!!

Questions: can the offset be extreme? And is the die wear homogeneous or can it take effect on some devices and not others?

The offset on the 1984s seem to be extreme in the case of the 8. I've overlayed the ghost device with circles. I even was wondering if this was a case Mike Diamond shared with us a couple of weeks back where impacted grease breaks off and creates a 'new' device. Just a guess on my part though. Let me indulge you further -

Die wear/deterioration will occur in the direction closest to the rim. Date to the right, LIBERTY to the left and the motto on the tops of the devices. On the reverse all the devices will show die wear on the tops of the devices facing toward rim.

Outward towards the rim - got it.

The other devices in this coin look reasonably crisp yet, but I do see some halo effect happening around the other digits of the date. But I see some 1984s with this condition looking pretty dull in the details; polished smooth as opposed to emery cloth scratches (note the hair details on this coin; smooth). 1968s and a few other 60s dates the same.

As always, thanks for having a look and for the explanation Coop.

Rackster, I was guilty of thinking that on several LDS & VLDS 1984 many a times even now till I step back and correct myself... I have to find them I got two extreme 1984 vlds that the motto texts looks like there melting and they also have Lincolns profile halo'd on them as well.

very cool info Coop, I like the pictures showing multi-hubbed dies show wear I started to break down and separate coins when going through a big batch of 50k wheaties into rolls or ziplocks by date, mint and die stage. Knowing die stage seams to help make the process way easier.

Ocala - I know the ones you are talking about (AU VLDS 1984s). They almost look like they were made from counterfeit dies. I seem to be a magnet for them: they appear in each CRH event.
