Sure looks good to me. Looks to have been played with a bit or wiped across the face to get those hairlines.

Agreed - looks authentic - though might be cleaned.

The abundance of horizontal hairlines on the obverse makes me think it was cleaned.

Could the hairlines be die polishing marks maybe ?

Looks real. I don't think the hairlines are a result of die-polishing rather some sort of post-mint cleaning.

Before I looked at the responses, I thought the date on the coin looked funny..too narrow and something about the 9 didn't look right.. But.. if some of the expert Indian head members thinks it's O.K. ..I agree.

If fake they did an excellent job getting the weakness and wear in the right places. Cleaned and retoned (Dellars) maybe?

if the weight wasn't off, I wouldn't suspect anything.

Why would an 1893 IH be fake?

Looks nice to me. I compared the 9 to several from the 1890s on ebay, they all look similar. The bottom of the 9 turns all the way back up.

Quote: I thought the date on the coin looked funny..too narrow and something about the 9 didn't look right.. Yeah...something about the date looks different than other 1893s...particularly the 8. It may be a trick of the light or an earlier die state. The 8 and 9 digits tend to close up on the inside and 'balloon' on the outside as the die wears.

I agree why fake an 1893? It is common. I have a fake 1876, full liberty and some diamonds I think. Didn't pay much but got my money back through buyer protection. Paid for the other coins that came with it though.
