Just spotted this puppy on ebay ....

http://www.ebay.com/itm/1857-1857-F...em5408164d2e

Can't decide if it's Environmental Damage or No Good ..

I'm thinking NG ...

What's the consensus, folks?
Rest in Peace

With 26 bids and three days left somebody sees something.
I can't see the "Strong Doubling of Entire Date," as stated. IMHO

Looking close up, the surfaces appear uniformly granular across the fields and detail; this, to my aging eyes.

If there is doubling on the date, the zoom doesn't show it very well.

But, like bpoc1 says.. someone sees something.

Do you think that the seller thinks the line down the 7 in the date is doubling?

The surfaces do look on the rough side. Perhaps a coin that was dug up and cleaned?

I don't see any doubling - but I really don't like the surfaces, something's happened to that coin.

I'm leaning towards reproduction based on the granular texture of the surfaces. At any rate something major is wrong with this coin.

Joe2007, I was wondering the same thing. A coin with original surfaces should have flatter fields and sharper definition of details. I don't see date doubling either.
The coin may have been badly corroded/cleaned? Some granular details remind me of spark-erosion counterfeits--look at those denticles.

I have it as a heavily-cleaned, dug coin. Doesn't matter either way - I would't touch it with money I stole from you.

I'm not even convinced this is authentic either. Someone is hoping to score a problem free AU 1857 with an overdate for $50. lol
