Hey everyone, I did quite a bit of research on this coin which was left to me in my late father's coin collection. I first had turned to Facebook and received a reply from "Halls Hammered Coins" that it was Spanish in origin cira 1600-1700's. My further research seems to indicate the following: 1-It is an eight reales silver Spanish cob coin. 2-It appears to have been fabricated in Mexico City. 3-I believe the Assayer's initial is a 'D'. If so then it would have had to have been manufactured either from 1618-1634 or 1724-1728. 4-Despite what the Assayer's initial seems to indicate some further research puts the coin more into the 1500's. If anyone can confirm my findings or add any further detail I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks so much! Rich *** Moved by Staff to a more appropriate forum. ***

Colonialjohn and swamperbob are the pros when it comes to 8R coins (no offense to the other pros, these two came to mind first) I'd change the title of the thread to include that it is possibly an 8R and then have the mods move this to the World Coin section where they're more likely to see it. and to the Community. -MV

Hey again MV,
I would like to take your advice and move this thread to the correct forum. Is there a process for this. I checked the FAQ's but couldn't find anything specific to this. Your help is appreciated. By the way I think my brain is mush from researching today...

To move a thread:
You can click the Send Note to Staff found in the lower right corner of your posts. Type that you'd like to move it to the World Coins and Commemorative forum and they'll be happy to move it.
To edit the title of your thread:
Click the pencil found on the right hand side (first icon). Then type what you'd like the title to be in the subject line.
Hope this helps.

This one isn't_quite "unidentified;" we're reasonably sure it's an 8R. For that reason, I'll stick it into World Coins and edit the title to be a bit more specific.

To be sure of what it is (denomination), could you please weight it ?
As for the origin, that one is from mexico.
Last thing, can you get clearer pictures please ? There are copies of this type, and from what I see, it could be one (but it can also be the picture, which makes me believe so).

Thanks for everyone's help on this. I will have to try and get it weighed but I don't have anything to weigh it at the moment. I can tell you that it was sitting in my father's collection for years on end. He passed away in 1997 and was sick for many years before this. Most of his coins were collected anywhere from the 1930's to the 1970's. If there were fakes proliferating at this time then it may indeed be a fake. I will attempt to take a good picture of the coin. Last time I just scanned it with my printer. Probably not the best idea.

COMMONLY-seen tourist shop-type cast replica of a ca. 1618-20 Mexico 8R. Should be rather obvious even if you've never seen this particular fake before... Most iterations are cheap white base metal (sometimes they come gold-colored).
On a popular treasure hunting/metal detecting forum I check in on every so often (to see what Spanish stuff gets found, shipwreck info, etc.), every 2 months or so, someone finds this exact type along one of Florida's hot spots for wreck material and thinks they've hit the jackpot... It's kids or whoever seeding the beach with them just to fark with the metal detectorists.

So this was not only the picture ;) It was pretty clear from the design, and the way the mint mark looks, but I got fooled by pictures recently so ... I'm more careful.
