just bought 25 cents worth of BU 1974D pennies from a cashier and the most beautiful gem has her fingerprint on it. It was just an hour ago. Should I rinse with alcohol?
I know this is a common date and everything but I'd like to help it if I can.

I see no harm in trying it.If it doesn't do the trick try a dip in "pure" acetone not nail polish remover.Post a before/after pics.

Pending if you don't mind having Acetone around, go to Walmart, Kmart, or any place that sell paint. They should have Acetone by the Quart. Just dip those coins in the Acetone and the prints should vanish.

I went ahead and tried it. I didn't get a before picture but I dumped rubbing alcohol onto the coin let it sit for about 20 sec, turned it over and did the same thing. Then I blasted it with water from my sink to remove whatever oils the alcohol loosened up, then I rinsed again with alcohol to prevent water spots and then patted dry gently with a cotton cloth. Worked pretty well. It was a lot to go through to preserve a coin with over 4 billion mintage but hey what they heck. It's a Gem, fairly well struck coin, thought it was worth a shot.
Figures that the best coin in the stack of 25 would have finger prints on it!

Has a nice die clash on the reverse. Where was the prints? Also a tip:take pics before you put the coin in any kind of a holder.I am not good at grading but will guess MS63 red.

What a stunner. If you ask me, that's the best mark-free, red obverse I've ever seen on a 70s LMC business strike!
If only there wasn't that gash over T in CENT on the reverse.....I'd say MS-65.

well, I bought 25c worth of these from the cashiers register. about half of them are weaker strikes. ie: no defining line between the field and lincoln's throat on some of them. some of them actually had better reverses in terms of strike quality and marks. This one has a lot of die polishing on the reverse but the obverse is indeed a stunner which is what prompted me to "conserve" it, as they say.

edit: this is probably common but the edges are all red-brown from their paper wrapper.

Yes, that is a great-looking 74D. Good call on the conservation.
