I'm new to the world of Australian sovereigns and just like to know what peoples first sovereigns were. I bought my first it being a 1866 very good fine coin from Jagger's.

That is also a very nice sovereign. Any between 1855 to 1870 are always good coins considering that the over 2ct were silver

That is a great story Shane.
My first sovereign was one given to my grandfather in a civic ceremony, in recognition for serving in World War I. He was wounded at Gallipoli and again on the Western front somewhere, but lived to tell the tale... and get married.
He said he hung on to it as a reserve; if things got tough, he could get a fortnights groceries with it. But things didn't that tough and so he hung on to it eventually giving it to his grandson, along with an excellent 1888 Crown.
His sovereign is one of my fondest possessions.

My first gold coin was a 1911-S half-sovereign bought in 1995 off the coin dealer who would go on to form Roxbury's Auctions. My first full sovereign was a 1910-S from a Roxbury's auction in 1997. In the Sydney Mint pre-1870 series I only have an 1864 half. I don't own a Melbourne-minted sovereign yet; of the seven British Imperial mint branches to issue sovereigns, Melbourne is my only missing one.

1897M from Ye Olde Coin. I was new to collecting so I just wanted a nice safe coin from a reputable dealer. It is a shame that the "mother country" forced them to start minting the St George reverse as it isn't one of my favourite designs. I much prefer the Sydney Mint reverse

An 1870 Sydney Mint was my first - I upgraded to a much better version from the same year, but I think I will hang onto my old one for sentimental reasons (it was also my first gold coin).

1891 Jubilee head Sydney Mint Half Sovereign. That was way back in 1963.
My first sovereign was an 1872 Young Head Shield, Melbourne Mint.
I had completed the Australian gold type set on my 21st birthday, with the purchase of an Adelaide Pound F - VF condition; I paid $250 for it in 1967. The set included a '56 Sydney Mint half Sovereign in Fine, and a '55 Sydney Mint Sovereign in good Fine.
Interestingly, the Half Sovereign sub type set were all of the Sydney Mint. Seventeen coins in all, in the Half - full Sovereign type set.
Despite the expense type set albums were available, but I made my own, with full descriptive annotation for each in gold lettering on red leatherette background. Each coin was enclosed in a clear sheet polystyrene jacket made by myself.
