I don't have all of the relevant literature at hand but they're both Indian die obverse and I don't think they're dot over top scroll (though which of the other four varieties they are I'm not sure). There's some information on picking a dot over top scroll at http://www.thesandpit.net/index.php...920dat_penny which you might need a loupe to make use of.

Did someone call?
Both coins are curved based letter reverses. All CBL 1920 pennies are Dot Below.

What is the actual story of the 20 no dots
I have heard so many different versions
Are they rare or not
McDonald's list them as rare in the column with the 30 penny surely not
My father collected 1920 no dots would like to get some feedback on its rarity and price

The No Dot 1920 is slightly scarce (not rare) If they were as rare as some claim then I wouldn't have 500+ of them. I find that about 55% of 1920 pennies are curved based reverse lettering (fishtail lettering)and they are all Dot Below. The other 45% are FBL (flat based lettering)and at least 15% of those are genuine No Dot. Over half of all average circulated condition coins show no visible dot (weak dots to start with and decades of wear) so the only reliable method is knowing the tiny die markers for each of the working FBL dies. There are 5 probable No Dot dies and they all have the Indian obverse.
Even after 94 years I still find strong regional variations in the distribution of coins from each die, so the exact % of each variety is a guesstimate.

Greg McDonald posts occasionally on the Australian Coin Forum, someone who knows him should ask why a relatively common coin still gets pride of place in his books. My understanding from many years ago was the 1920 no-dot with the English Obverse was the holy grail but since the Internet(& Forums) started in Oz.most(all?)of these have been shown to be dot-unders with a missing or weak dot.
After saying all that I'm no authority, for 50 years the only interest I had in 1920 pennies was whether they had a dot over the top scroll or not,its only recently when I have a bit more spare time that I've taken an interest(Thanks Neal) in varieties.

Hi all , I have read a bit about the 1920 penny and am very confused .

I definitely read that a lot of the no dot pennies were actually weak strikes and wear as stated above, But I was under the impression from that article that the rare 1920 penny is actually the double dot version, Dot above top scroll and dot below bottom scroll.

I have seen one of these and it has a very distinct die crack near the commonwealth which the article also talked about, apparently it is the rarest 1920 but now I'm just more confused. I can look for the article if you want to read it.

How To Identify A 1920 Dot Above Top Scroll Penny

The dot above top scroll is by far the scarcest of the 1920 dot variety pennies and possibly second scarcest of the eight 1920 die combination varieties. The true mintage is difficult to ascertain but it appears that just one die was used and given how often they are found, a figure in the region of 20,000 seems reasonable.

Even on a sizable image, the dot above top scroll is difficult to pick. The two images directly below were kindly provided by David Guy and relate to his ebay listing during February 2008. As you can see the dot above the top scroll cannot be clearly seen in the image of the full reverse. Note also that this is also an exceptionally clear example of the dot above top scroll penny.

Now compare with the 1920 double dot penny. The dot above the top scroll is much easier to see.

Unfortunately as the lower dot of the much more common 1920 double dot penny is subject to die fill, some care is required for correct identification.
There are however some definite die characteristics that enable us to clearly differentiate between the double dot and dot above top pennies. In the tables below, we compare some key areas of the coins. (In all, the top two images are of different dot above top scroll pennies and the bottom one is of a double dot penny).

The dot above the top scroll is much more clearly defined on the double dot penny. There is a definite "moat" around the double dot and the dot above top appears quite weak (and is hard to see with the naked eye and difficult to scan).

There are some raised lines due to die damage above the W of COMMONWEALTH on the double dot pennies. These do not appear on the dot above top. This is the clearest means of identification.

On the dot above top there is a very faint line extending out from near the base of the final A in AUSTRALIA. This is absent on the double dot penny. Unfortunately this can be difficult to see; indeed while it is visible on the first of the two specimens pictured it cannot be readily seen on the second.

Acknowledgements: Special thanks to Dr Paul Holland who first described the differing die charactersitics of the double dot and dot above top pennies to me and also to David Guy for allowing the use of his dot above top penny images.

The (very) rare 1920 penny is the English obverse Dot Above (above lower scroll). Fewer than 20 known.
Rare is the Dot Above Top scroll penny. Maybe only 1 in 200 (or less).
Rare also is the CBL Dot Below with the obverse off the 1921 Indian hub (3 dies), maybe 1 in 80.
Scarce, Dot Below English (2 die pairs known), maybe 1 in 50.
Scarce, Double Dot (1 die pair),maybe 1 in 30.
Slightly scarce, No Dot (5 die pairs).
The Dot Above (6 die pairs) is relatively common.
The Dot Below (FBL) (over 20 die pairs) is common
The Dot Below (CBL) (over 40 die pairs) is most common.
