Hi
Wondering if anyone knows anything about this coin? I have done quite a bit of research and found out it is from France in 1337 by King Philip VI. What I don't know is how to tell if it's from the 1st emission or 2nd etc. and how to know how much it may be worth. Obviously, someone thought it would make a nice button. Should I have a jeweler remove the post or leave it as is?
Thanks, barb

Ouch that's a darn shame! If I remember right, such coins are pretty expensive and without that, it would have cost more than 1,000+USD although I am no expert in French coins. But with that... perhaps slightly better than gold bullion value.

Here are few examples sold by Clark Smith but he doesn't have many such examples:

It is an "Ecu d'or à la chaise", a gold ecu with a chair (throne). There were six mintings from 1337 to 1348.

On the obverse is the legend PHILIPPVS DEI GRA FRANCORVM REX, which means "Phillip King of France, by the Grace of God". The obverse shows a King seated on a Gothic throne, holding a sword, with a shield of fleurs-de-lis.

The reverse legend is XPC VINCIT XPC REGNAT XPC IMPERAT "Christ overcomes, Christ reigns, Christ commands". The reverse shows a cross in an ornamented quadrilobe.

The standard reference work is Duplessy's "Monnaies Royales Françaises", vol. I, which covers the royal French coinage from Hugh Capet to Louis XII.

This is Duplessy 249. Here is an example of the 3rd minting in 1348

Unfortunately I don't have this reference (yet), so I am not sure of how to tell which minting you have. It is on my list of books to buy.

IMHO, expert removal of the post would increase its appeal to a coin collector. I would value it at about $200. It should measure 22mm in diameter and weigh 4.53 grams.
