Here's one of five 1809s I've found over the years. This one came from an area in Dumfries Virginia where tobacco was being traded. High ground and sandy soil accounts for the condition. Grade?

I would say VF 20 condition before it was lost. A great find.

Obviously copper and bronze coins recovered from the ground will have to show various degrees to damage due to exposure to the environment. But this is irrelevant - the thrill of finding remnants of the past overrides any other consideration, in my opinion. Their value to the finder goes way beyond a 'grade'.

VF details. Amazing condition for a dug copper of that age. Shows you the quality of our current coins, when 1809s look better than dug 2009s!
