I'm looking for opinions on this 1851 Half Cent as to whether it has been cleaned. I think it has, but I'm still learning to determine this on old coppers.

It's high grade, but the lighter areas around the bust and the protected areas don't look like original mint red to me.

What are people's opinions on it? Thanks for helping me learn.

I would say it has an older cleaning. Notice how the color differs around the stars, letters, and other hard to reach places in comparison with the fields.

Thanks for the responses. It's good to see I'm getting better at spotting cleaned coppers. I still have a LOT to learn, though.

I have recently developed a copper coin cleaner that imparts no patina or cartwheel effect change to copper alloy and that can effectively clean copper coins.

Contact me privately if you are seriously looking for a good copper coin cleaner. My old formula Coin Care ran out so I took to the laboratory to produce a good copper coin cleaner - after a year I think I found it. Its 2 oz. bottle & $40.00.
