The detail of the badge is the standard HONI SOIT QUI MAL Y PENSE on a belt but inside the belt there's a crowned lion standing left, facing. In a box underneath, the letters: FIRM

I don't have anything specific on the medal, but the crest is of the British 29th (Worcester)Regiment, which served in India in the mid 1800's. It does look more like field hockey than ice hockey.
Hope this gives you some leads.

It's actually the Garter Star Badge of the Worcestershire Regiment, formed when the 29th (Worcestershire) Regiment of Foot (the regiment that committed the Boston Massacre) was amalgamated with the 36th (Herefordshire) in 1881; the motto "Firm" comes from the 36th. This form of the badge came later, though; I'm finding a reference to 1923.

Thanks, Amwyll and philadelphian,
That's useful enough.
It must therefore be hockey, since an English regiment wouldn't play shinty, and from the way they're dressed, it's very unlikely to be ice hockey.

So I googled, and found a photo of their hockey team
