I am putting together a set of MS66 Jefferson nickels and noticed a strange anomaly with the 1960-D. Coin World trends has this coin at $40, which presumably incorporates both raw and slabbed market activity.

NGC prices this coin in MS66 (pop = 148) at $43.75 in their holder with no change in the prior 12 months. PCGS on the other hand prices the 1960-D in MS66 at $285 with a pop of 53. It should also be noted that the PCGS price trending for this coin over the past 5+ years has been strongly downward, from $900 in November 2008 to the current $285 including a drop of about $140 in just the past 12 months.

ebay activity is interesting with most of the PCGS coins at (and in most cases well above) PCGS trend prices. A few NGC slabs are being offered in the same pricing range as PCGS slabs, while some "straddle" the pricing ($90 - $140) despite the $43.75 trends price on NGC's site.

So with the data above as background, what is causing the volatility in pricing for the '60-D Jeff and the vastly different estimates of pricing from the various sources?

Thanks and all the best,

Ed

sherm, look @ the year-to-date price changes toward the bottom in 66.
Seeing the rise about floored me. This is just a guess, I think this is testiment to Jeff collectors getting serious. I see the series as the only one, where an entire run is still available in circulation. 66 seems still affordable for many,
so it's supply & demand.

60-D is a rare date in FS (Full Steps) it is one of those real stoppers out of there. So some collectors not being able to find an MS-64 FS or MS-65 FS even if money is not object will then fire the bullets at an MS-66 (WITHOUT FS) because that will sort of match any surrounding dates in FS that they have and if it is say a 3 Step or 4 Step coin (3 or 4 Full Steps) well that's as good as can be found so you get the idea. Then when you add in the fact that the coin is slabbed by PCGS or NGC that becomes a whole new ballgame especially with a modern coin (1940 or after) that is a condition rarity where the next grade up (MS-67 in this case) is either top of pop or a gigantic jump in price.

Atch- interesting. So the scarcity of one grade is increasing demand in another grade. Would never have thought of that.
