When they took the canadian pennies out of circulation I ordered $5000.00 to go through, I'm down to my last 20 boxes or so. Opened one up this morning and was amazed at what I saw. Over half of the rolls stood taller in the box than the rest, that immediately told me they were at least from the 70's. The first roll I grabbed had "mixed King George" written on the outside........every coin was late 30's to mid 40's. Needless to say my excitement was climbing :)

Roll after roll was the same, pulled three rolls of mint uncirculated 1967, two rolls of mint uncirculated 1962, and numerous rolls from the 30's-60's. After staring at thousands and thousands of newer coins this box sent me through the roof.......what an amazing box!

Sorry just had to share (and brag!)

I've had some decent luck this month, got a 1913 Lincoln the other day that was a hole filler, nice grab on all those pennies

What amazing results. It is a good thing you got so many increasing your chances of good finds like those. As I box hunt cents here in the States and living relatively close to Canada, I have started tossing my Canadians into two jars - one before and one on and after 1960.

@Fireman638: Good move!

If We are going to discontinue our penny one day I will also order 200 boxes for searching later.

Very nice finds! I know exactly what you mean about the taller rolls. Half a million pennies is a lot of searching! You must have found more than a few little gems. Do you keep almost everything and organize by year or dump a lot of them?

Since the RCM will be (or are) melting pennies, I wonder what the value will be in 5 or 10 years for:

Pre 1940 pennies
1940-1980 pennies
1980 and up pennies

I expect to see a HUGE increase in these values, as I am betting that the RCM was able to pull 80% or more during this time, and this % will only increase as time goes by.

O-train, I don't dump any. I sort by year and variety and sell them on ebay either individually or by the roll. I separate out USA and other foreign to sort later, and also separate any that are AU to be assembled into full sets later. I haven't tried selling any rolls pre-1960 yet, I'm waiting until I'm done sorting. I want to put a roll of each year and variety away for each of my kids. I've found quite a few clipped planchettes, one blank planchette, and other eye catchers. Great way to pass time!

LeoS, I'm hoping the value jumps.....it'll be a year or two before I'm completely done sorting and organizing. I use my sales to add to my personal collection, and it's been working good so far!

Where/how are you going to dump that many coins? I can see the bank tellers bolting the doors as you pull into the parking lot with your car bottoming out from all the weight.

Brag away! That is what keeps everyone going to the bank, especially after getting skunked!! I love hearing stories like yours. Great Find!
