Hello... I often post on the Canadian coin threads but rarely on the U.S. ones.. partially because I'm from Canada and partially because I really haven't picked up or learned a lot about U.S. coins..

A friend of mine wanted to sell some coins so I picked up what he had and in the lot there was some U.S. stuff....

I was wondering what the value of the coins were.. (we tried to look up the value but his books were from the 70's and I had no idea.. so we just settled on a price and I'm wondering if we were even close to the ball park...

I have included pics of two of the coins I really thought were very interesting...

1883 5c looks to be EF... maybe AU.. (your opinions on grade would be appreciated there)

1853 1/2 dime looks to be in fine condition... sorry for the bad photos just wanted to post these pics up today...

Other coins in the lot included:
1940 10cent UNC
1936 10cent UNC
1938 10cent UNC

1936 5cent VF-EF

1939 5cent VG
1949 5cent F
1955 5cent F

1972 5 cent UNC (proof)

1982 5cent EF - one P & one D mint marks
1983 5cent AU - one P & one D mint marks

1984 5 cent

What value would you give on this lot?

Any info you can give on the coins would be helpful .. TIA!

You should really look up on the many web sites how to locate Mint Marks on coins. Some do and some dom't have them. A Mint mark is where the coin was made. For example your Dimes appear to be what is called a Mercury dime. On the reverse, near the bottom left side may be a D or S. If nothing, made in Philidelphia. D is for Denver and S is for SanFranciso. Some coins do not have any at all. If you go to that Numismedia web site, you'll have to know exactly what you have.

The 1883 nickel is XF no doubt and maybe higher. Many were saved and many survive in high condition. There were two made: one without the words 'cents' and one with 'cents.
Yours is without.

The 1853 Half Dime: there are three places which I examine -
The pole to cap. Where it crosses the left arm it wears the quickest.
Right shoulder clasp. The more detail the better.
Liberty. Has unusual wear patterns. Here I want to see three-dimensionality.
When you check the photo grading pictures you now know where to look.

If you are comfortable please tell us the price you agreed to.

Thanks a lot guys.. had a look at the site... it's great... had a look at some other coins.. I tell ya there's some really neat looking classic coins... I may have developed an itch that will need a scratch!

I didn't really look at mint marks at all but from the looks of things I had given my friend a pretty fair offer which is all that I really wanted... While we both had already agreed $60 was fair... I just wanted to make sure I really didn't have anything too valuable that I was taking advantage...

Thanks for the info and putting me onto that website ... will bookmark it and use it as a reference point from now on!
