I'm posting this link above to an ebay auction that finished for over $80 including shipping. A few weeks ago it might have hit $30 and even then I'd be surprised. I'll let you guys provide the negative commentory on what's wrong with that coin. Obviously, it has some serious issues.

I don't know what to think. I'm speechless.

The price it's going for is basically off-the-charts as far as all the guides go. I think some people are starting to realize just how scarce that year really is. I wonder if the CDN will start to reflect what's going on.

More "proof"

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dl...WA:IT&ih=012 Here's another one that went nutty! At least this one doesn't look like a problem.

Please spell out what's wrong with the first coin. I'm trying to learn about what to look for.

Based on what you're saying, if I can buy a complete set of these for $3000, it might be one heck of a deal. Right?

If that complete set is "all there" and the collector carefully put together the set as a medium to high-grade circulated (or better) set, yes $3000 could be a bargain. There's a lot of "if's", though.

That first coin has been extremely harshly treated. Notice how chalky white it looks with rusty toning and overall just rough. It might have been dipped in nitric acid or some other strong stripping agent. The corrosion doesn't help either. I talked to another collector who saw that coin and says it shouldn't retail more than a tenth of what that bid is at now. To me, the coin is virtually worthless except as an education piece to show others what to avoid.

1882! Very cool. Any pix? That's one of the tougher business strike years. Congrats!

By the way, it's interesting that you mention 1882....I also made some new purchases recently...but, that's for another thread coming up.

It's just a circulated Fine coin. What's interesting is that the '2' always looks like it's a overdate.
