Hello all you geniuses, hope you can help w this one. Just now while looking at some 1982 pennies, I found one (lg date variety) that had me scratching my head. It's copper, (non magnetic) ; but it weighs 3.4 grams... Put in between 2 other pennies it actually even looks thicker; though I don't think a pic would do justice, so I didn't include one of that. Does anyone know about this, or know what this is? Thanks for your help.

Sorry about the blurry pics, I hope you can see the weight on the scale, and yes it's accurate.

Have you tried weighing a 1981 cent, a 1983 cent and see what weight it shows. Always best to check with other coins to see if the scale is accurate. I have one that is should be accurate, but it is not. The weight should be for the 1981 cent 3.11 grams and the 1983 2.5 grams. Also check to make sure something is not on the coin. Glue/paint/plating/dirt/nail polish can add weight and thickness to a coin. Some coin feel thicker because the rim during the setup of the rim is thicker makes the coins feel thicker because the edge is taller, but still normal in weight. I've seen planchets that were rolled thin and lower in weight. But it is not often see hear of one over weight. But anything is possible.

Yes I did compare it to 2 other 82's, and another one from a diff date. All of those, fine. This one, every time is 3.4. After my counterfeit Mercury dime fiasco I weigh everything. And no extra anything however, it does look to be maybe a little different in diameter somehow. I'll try to get another pic up.

I would say it is struck on an overweight planchet. Tolerance allows up to 3.2 so yours is .2 grams heavy. As Coop said an overweight planchet is unusual but possible.

if your camera has a MACRO or close up feature - usually indicated by a flower, turn that on. Then don't zoom in to closely. Anything over 2.0x in MACRO mode becomes unstable.

I've seen between 3.0 and 3.2. Possibly at the upper end of the tolerance. I recall seeing it posted somewhere, but not well enough to make a complete record in my brain.

The center one. (Rim nick gives it away.)

I am not sure, because of the blurry pics, but do I see a rim Cud running from about the "S" in "TRUST" down to about the 3 o'clock position. I know it shouldn't, but could this possibly add weight? Just a guess...

The rim is raised a little bit around where sudz said, also around from about 6 to 8 o clock. I'll try to see if I can get better pics up also.

This cent was struck on a planchet punched out of rolled-thick stock. Such errors can be as heavy as 4.2 grams (and reportedly even heavier).
Error coin writer and researcher.

Thanks Mike diamond. Does that affect the value, and are these certified errors?
