Yep, I went 3CN crazy!

I'm ecstatic about these recent purchases, from three different sources.

1875 3CN AU58-Nice luster remains on this coin, although a bit muted; very, very difficult to find in this high grade
Newps:-Guess-Which-Type-:-----Lots-Of-Pix! Newps:-Guess-Which-Type-:-----Lots-Of-Pix!

1875 3CN PCGS MS62-Improper allow mixture gives this coin its streaky copper color; PCGS might not have liked the coloration much and netted it down a grade; lots of luster, but not gem-like
Newps:-Guess-Which-Type-:-----Lots-Of-Pix! Newps:-Guess-Which-Type-:-----Lots-Of-Pix!

1880 3CN NGC XF45-The strike is a bit stronger than I'd like for a coin where I can't see the edge to be certain it's not a Proof, but the Gifford die variety appears to place this is a business strike
Newps:-Guess-Which-Type-:-----Lots-Of-Pix! Newps:-Guess-Which-Type-:-----Lots-Of-Pix!

1882 3CN F15-Has the immediate look of an old-time VG+ grade, but the vertical lines on the reverse show it's closer to VF than it is VG; great original surfaces
Newps:-Guess-Which-Type-:-----Lots-Of-Pix! Newps:-Guess-Which-Type-:-----Lots-Of-Pix!

1882 3CN VF35-Absolutely superb surfaces and great original look; not quite XF
Newps:-Guess-Which-Type-:-----Lots-Of-Pix! Newps:-Guess-Which-Type-:-----Lots-Of-Pix!

1882 3CN AU50+-This has AU58 wear, but a lack of luster nets it to an AU+; overall nice strike and decent coin
Newps:-Guess-Which-Type-:-----Lots-Of-Pix! Newps:-Guess-Which-Type-:-----Lots-Of-Pix!

Wow, those are some incredible coins! I hope that my collection grows to be even half as great as yours someday!

I really like the mottled look of the slabbed 1875.

Yep...I was thinking the same thing myself. I'll have to update that 1875 3CN collage now.

Nice coins. I've got a question about your remarks on the 1880.

How can you tell if the coin is a proof from the edge?

The edge on a high-grade circulated coin usually can give a coin away if it's a Proof or not. A Proof should have a squared-off, almost sharp, edge and they should be mirrored. The edge will appear somewhat rounded on a business strike like you see above. If it's been in circulation too long, all bets are off, unless there's some other diagnostic that hasn't worn off.

I'm glad I already have the 3CN covered in my 7070. Sooner or later, all the rest will be ending up at Prethen's house.

Dave - don't EVEN THINK about saying that to my wife. She'd spend every last one of 'em!

But, seriously, I had to laugh out loud at that one. I have more 3CN now than I can shake a stick at.

When is it too many?

Well, let's just say I have less than a hundred. I do know of a least one guy who has bought thousands of them. I will only buy superb coins that I feel are a value for the year, grade, and eye appeal. Unfortunately for my bank account, I stumbled across more than a few recently.
