Picked this up local and my first copper coin.. it's not as light as pictures show in hand as I have a bright sunny day out..

I'm at VF-25. Why do the surfaces look so grainy?

Artifact of the in-camera sharpening process on a high-megapixel sensor. Or maybe he sharpened it too much in postprocessing.

there are 33 different varieties in 1853 - unless you see a characteristic die marker, it is going to take a couple hours.

look at it under a loupe, see any die cracks anywhere?

I don't see any.. I think it's the date as the 1 is low and has space between the neck and top of one as most I have seen pictures of are alot higher..
