Hi, looking for some ideas. I collect coins in albums, mostly Dansco. I like to be able to pull them out to look at or show, or add coins to them, without having to pull them out of Tupperware hidden in closets. However, I am getting nervous because they I don't want to just leave them on a book shelf. Trying to find locking bookcase or cabinet where they can be inside it bookshelf style. However, my wife does not want a locking garage metal cabinet look. She would prefer wood with tempered glass. Has anyone found a good locking-- but attractive-- cabinet for their albums that they could recommend?

You might consider a barrister-style bookcase; They're designed to protect and keep the dust off of legal books/journals some of those have locking panes. Here's an example in quarter-sawn white oak. It doesn't have locking panes but could be modified. You'd probably have to replace the glass with tempered on just about any bookcase. Some gun display cabinets or liquor display cabinets will also have locks. Good luck and let us know what you come up with.

Ikea has a few locking glass cabinets. It just depends on the level of security that you want because it is a wafer lock + glass. Not strong but it'll keep invited people out.

no no no...glass breaks to easy. get a safe..then if some..you INVITE wants to look at them bust em out..show them off in my weird humble opinion...in todays world if you leave something valuable laying around some one will try and snatch it. there is a thread..ongoing right now about a fella whos friend stole his valuable coin,,and flaunted it in his face if it was in a safe...it would not have happened this is my display case this goes where my coins do....

So much depends on where you live, who you have over for guests and/or relatives. The reason I mention this is coins have a massive tendency to vanish. For some reason many people think your coins are for them to take and use. Placing coins or anything of value out on display in some areas are like saying here, come take me. Regardless of on a shelf, in a cabinet, in a safe, as long as they are on display, they are just not safe. And don't think that if it's only relatives that see them, they are safe. Many home robberies are found to be by either a relative or friends of relatives. However, if you completely trust everyone you know, remember you don't know everyone that they know. For now I suggest just keeping coins in places you know, not the rest of the world.

Frodo, sounds like you live in Detroit. I honestly thought the OP wanted something to show off his collection, like cheap mint sets and such, just for display.

The OP hasn't commented on our suggestions in 12 days at this point and this is his first and only post. So who knows.
Sometimes I don't even want to reply to the people with 1 post as it's likely they'll never even see it.

Hi, Sorry for the delay in posting back. I have been looking for the right piece and have been genuinely appreciative of the suggestions. Not sure why it shows as my first post because I have posted two other times in the past. Been a few months though.
Anyway, all the suggestions are great.
I have been looking at a red Sanduskey clearview 72" locking cabinet...seemed pretty secure until I read the posts, haha.
Now I am looking into a safe as well.
I hope to be able to upload a picture of whatever I choose soon.
In the meantime the ideas on here have been great and I am thinking about using them in some capacity or another, even if not for the main safety concern here.

Update: So I decided to go with a no handle locking gun cabinet. It is not as secure as a safe, but much more secure than a locking metal cabinet with a handle like Sandusky. Locked and bolted to the wall studs it will deter most criminals without a crowbar and a lot of time (unless they have good lock picking skills I guess). Certainly it will keep neighbors or less desirable relatives (haha) out of it. It has an all storage option with the shelving (not shown in picture) so it was able to be configured to my needs. Since it is metal I feel more comfortable with the environment than with wood or carpet. I will still throw in silica gel just to be safe. I hope it works well for my needs...it is only day 1. Thanks everyone for their suggestions!

Quote: 'Placing coins or anything of value out on display in some areas are like saying here, come take me.' I totally agree with this. Locks are only made to keep honest people honest. If someone wants something bad enough, they will most likely be able to get it, or damage it in the process of trying to get it. Out of sight is the best way to keep coins, in my opinion. Very few of my friends have ever seen my collection. Not that the rest are not reliable and honest enough to see it, but word of mouth has a way of making to some unsavory individuals, no matter how innocent the talk is intended to be!!

@ coinmap I agree wholeheartedly, only 7 people know I collect coins. My coins are never shown to guests, and I keep the amount of guest to a minimum to insure I don't have problems. I do believe loose lips sink ships.
