I believe the below coin is a Proof? 1) Am I correct? and 2) Any thoughts as to a grade?

Thanks.

Looks like a proof-strike. Although can't tell for sure, might just be Brilliant MS.

At least MS-64, probably higher.

According to The Red Book, page 313.

1989W, Congress Bicentennial gold $5.00

Distributed 46,899

MS-67 = $400.00
PF-67 = $400.00

Don't know if this helps.

Did this come in a Set?

@ Dar. Thank you. Yes, helpful information. Unfortunately I have no idea if it came in a set. I am not the original owner and it was the only modern coin in the collection I received.

Well, It is a VERY nice coin in my eye's.

If it were mine, I would have it sent off to be attributed and slab'd. The price of the coin as is would make it worth it to me weather keeping or selling.

Plus it would protect the coin AND answer your question!

I'm Not sure which TPG would be the best to send it to though.

Let us know what you do and what you find out. I for one would be interested to know.

@ Dar Thank you - I think its a great looking coin as well. It will ultimately make its way into a slab (I know, TPG = bad, but as this is for my own collection and I have a bunch of other gold coins in PCGS slabs I like the uniformity of the slabs. I will post better images once my new camera arrives.

Here's a site with more info on modern commemorative coins http://moderncommemoratives.com/198...ress-5-gold/

According to this, the proof and uncirculated $5 were available
1. individually
2. 3 coin proof set (others being the half dollar and silver dollar)
3. 3 coin uncirculated set
4. 6 coin set (all uncs and proofs)

YW I came across that site a few months ago looking for information on a different commemorative.

Glad I was able to share this free info with you and the community.
