Looking for your opinions, sorry about the dust particles, but there is no way I will ever breathe on this coin! Any chance this is a Matte Proof?

How can you tell if it is a matte proof?

I am thinking 63 BN. Some hits here and there with a stain next to the left wheat stalk. Coincollector2012: An easy way to see if it's a matte proof or not is to look for squared, sharp rims. There are distinct die characteristics known for the Matte Proofs, and you can look for the diagnostics to tell if it's a matte proof.

Quote: How can you tell if it is a matte proof? There are many ways - you find out a lot just using google. The easiest things: perfect, square rims, a strong strike with lots of details, matte fields and they also tone wildly.

Guess I should have done some research before asking about matte proof in my initial post... I found a picture of a matte proof 1912 in a PCGS collection and it wasn't even close. The major give aways are the sharp rims, the matte finish graininess, more vivid coloring, and polishing near the rims at 3 o'clock. But still, I think this coin has a nice strike and I am very happy with it!

That makes a little more sense. I have never came across a matte proof and if I did I would not have been able to tell one apart from a really nice circulation strike.

I looked at some images of Matte proof Lincoln Cents on Google and I can see they all have square rims and some amazing toning. Thanks to this thread, I have a new found appreciation for these coins.
