Hello All -
I am admittedly a newbie at coin collecting, so please forgive my ignorance. I joined the forum to learn more, and as such I have a question. I was told by a friend that this 1969 S Jefferson nickel could be considered somewhat rare, both due to condition and due to the fact that it has the steps still visible on the back. The images I had to upload low-res images here that may not show it well, however the steps are all there. Is this indeed a coin worthy of getting certified, or is it just another nickel? I appreciate any help anyone can offer.
Bryan

You have a 1969-S proof nickel, specially struck for collectors and included in an annual set, almost 3 million were minted so it is not rare. Proofs are struck with higher pressure to get full details and the planchets are polished. Business strikes(circulating coinage) were minted in San Francisco from 1968-1970 so both types of nickels were available that year and the mintage was 120 million. You are correct that details that strong on a business strike would make for a conditionally rare nickel but that is the normal appearance of a proof coin.

While not rare, she's a beaut! Have fun and stop back soon.

As said above, it's a proof coin, made specifically for collectors. Not rare, but worth more than $.5

Looks like another one-and-done poster unfortunately.

Haven't being seeing new members continuing to post after they make one post, at least in a while. Most cases, they ask a question and just
leave.
Most of the people around here are Pillars, with some valued members. It's mostly old-time members posting for years. :(

Admittedly most people probably join just to ask a question they have and then move on. In our fast-moving society I guess that's to be expected, but if they stuck around they'd find this is a cool place to learn and expand one's knowledge of collecting!

Also consider how many people read/look and never join.

What many may do is post their question in multiple places, so if they get an answer elsewhere, they don't bother to come back.

Most of the "one and done" posters have no interest in collecting, they just have a coin and want to know if they can sell it for a lot of money. If the answer is no they're gone.
