There are so many stories out there about people spending coins and currency when they were younger that were "common" back then but which they now wish they had held onto. Things like Franklin and Kennedy silver half dollars, Eisenhower dollars, etc. Some of that has to do with the fact that silver is a lot more valuable today than it was back then, but there's also the simple fact that the coins are no longer in circulation today.

Now, I know it's impossible to predict what will be collectible, scarce, and/or valuable in the future, but I thought it would be fun to try and think about which coins and bills that are currently in circulation right now that we all spend on a regular basis will regret not hoarding years down the line.

For me, I'm thinking I'll regret spending all the ATB Quarters that I get in change. I find them to be some of the most beautiful designs ever put on circulated coinage, but it's hard to justify hoarding them because they are minted in huge quantities and have no intrinsic metal value. And yet, I wonder... And what about those "Westward Journey" Nickels from 2005? I still see them in circulation and wonder whether I'll regret spending them someday.

Canadian nickel coins, most likely. I already save them - they are good for trading.

In the US, probably nothing. All cheap low relief junk. Can't compare to the good ol' days when coins were quality. Still a lot of old copper cents in circulation. They are being sifted out quickly though.

That being said, I still collect all the quarters with my sons and we have fun doing it.

Nala had the same thoughts as I did. Canadian Nickels and Pennies will become very tradable in the future IMO. I've already got a 1000 coin hoard going or 1950-1990 Pennies and nickels plus about 120 Pre-1980 dimes.

I also might regret spending all the 2010 olympic and otherwise special-issue quarters such as the ATB's State Quarters and other Canadian series'.

Only time will tell. Most dealers have saved them in the thousands and because they have no intristic value it is unlikely that they're going anywhere.

Probably the 1965 to 1998 clad Washington quarters. The Mint wrecked Flanagan's depiction of Washington starting in 1999. I still see quite a few of the pre-1999 quarters and keep on spending them.

I really liked the original reverse, and I had hoped they would continue it when the ATB Quarters are done. But I understand that won't be the case.

The people who spent their 1894 S dimes may have some regrets!

1/2p, face value does not justify a great little coin.

I assume you are talking about the buffali variety. Considering close to 10% of the entire mintages was sold to collectors, and a lot more were hoarded as rolls from the bank, and that most of those are still in MS, I doubt they willl ever be worth much.

I'm not much of a fan of anything minted since the 40's. So other than silver content I don't think I'll regret spending any of it.

I wonder if Ike's really will ever be worth more than just over a buck?

I remember my aunt used to collect "Barr dollar bills" when I was a kid. I don't think those have ever been worth more than a dollar. LOL

Perhaps not. The same can be said for Susan B. Anthony dollars. I still regret spending all the Ikes my father gave me as a kid, however, and suspect my son will someday regret spending on the SBAs I've given him for allowance, good report cards, etc.

Humm, I have a large horde of coins from the past 50 years and my expectation is that 50 years from now my kids will scratch their heads and say 'What was he thinking?'

I agree, I regret not keeping anything except maybe all the copper pennies. I don't keep them all but do have a cookie tin of them just in case. Of course most people spend wheat pennies without thinking anything of them when dealers will pay 2x face right now for them.
